Restaurant insurance in San Diego.

From the dining room to the kitchen, build a coverage review around how you serve your guests.

Your menu is only part of the story.

A neighborhood café, a full-service dining room and a catering operation do not have the same insurance needs. Hours, cooking methods, alcohol sales, employees, delivery and off-site events all affect the discussion. The description on an application should reflect the business you actually run.

Insurance Steel Brokers helps restaurant owners in San Diego and North County review those exposures from our Carlsbad office. We connect liability, property, employee and vehicle questions instead of treating a business owners policy as an answer to everything.

Coverage questions for a working restaurant.

Guests and food-service liability

Discuss third-party injuries, property damage and allegations involving food you serve. Coverage depends on policy wording; alcohol service calls for a specific liquor-liability discussion rather than an assumption that GL is enough.

The premises and business income

A BOP may suit some eligible restaurants. Review property limits, tenant improvements, contents and business income terms, including the covered causes of loss that trigger protection.

Equipment, stock and spoiled food

Ask how refrigeration, cooking equipment, breakdown and spoilage are treated. These protections are not interchangeable and may need specific coverage or endorsements.

Kitchen and front-of-house employees

Review employee duties and payroll across food preparation, service, cleaning and delivery. California businesses with employees generally need workers’ compensation; general liability is not a substitute.

Deliveries and catering trips

Explain whether you use company vehicles, employees’ personal cars or third-party platforms. Consider commercial auto and hired/non-owned exposures without assuming a delivery platform covers every situation.

Reservations, ordering and payment systems

Online orders, customer records and payment systems create data and interruption questions. Discuss how a proposed policy responds to an incident and its exclusions.

Leases, patios and off-site events.

A restaurant’s lease may specify liability limits, additional insured status and property responsibilities. Share the insurance section rather than relying on a verbal description. A certificate alone does not amend a policy or guarantee that a contract’s requirements are met.

Tell us about outdoor seating, a patio expansion, catering at a separate venue or special events. These are changes in operations to discuss before assuming the current policy follows the business wherever it goes.

Plan for the cost of being closed.

A kitchen fire or equipment problem can create more than a repair bill. Lost sales, continuing expenses and the time needed to reopen deserve attention when setting business income limits and reviewing waiting periods.

Business income is not protection against every decline in revenue. The policy’s cause-of-loss requirements, exclusions and restoration period govern whether a particular interruption is covered. Similarly, utility interruption and spoilage should be reviewed explicitly.

What affects a restaurant insurance quote?

Annual sales, alcohol receipts, cooking equipment, fire protection, opening hours, payroll and loss history can affect available terms. A small counter-service operation may be evaluated differently from a late-night venue with entertainment or a business doing regular off-site catering.

Our local review begins with these details and your current policies. Compare limits, deductibles and exclusions along with premium. There is no reliable flat price for every restaurant, and market access does not guarantee an offer of coverage.

What to gather before requesting a quote.

  • Restaurant address, square footage, lease requirements and opening hours
  • Annual food, beverage and alcohol sales, including off-site activity
  • Cooking equipment, hood/suppression details and maintenance information
  • Payroll and employee duties, including any delivery drivers
  • Current policies, renewal dates, equipment values and claims history

Questions worth asking.

Does a restaurant need more than a business owners policy?
Often there are additional exposures to consider. Workers’ compensation, vehicles, liquor liability, equipment breakdown, spoilage and cyber risks may not be included in a standard BOP. Review the actual policy rather than the package name.
Do you help restaurants outside the city of San Diego?
Our office is in Carlsbad, and we serve clients across San Diego County, including North County, and elsewhere in California. Tell us every operating location so that eligibility and coverage can be reviewed correctly.
Are employee-owned delivery cars covered automatically?
No automatic assumption is safe. Personal auto policies and platform coverage may have limitations. Explain your delivery arrangements and ask about hired and non-owned auto liability and any other needed protection.
Does a quote request mean my restaurant is insured?
No. A request begins the review. Underwriting, your authorization and applicable requirements must be completed, and you should obtain written confirmation of coverage and its effective date before relying on it.
