Specialized insurance for the skilled trades.
Plumbers. HVAC technicians. Electricians. Carpenters. Flooring and drywall crews. We specialize in the businesses that build, install and keep California properties working.
Your trade deserves more than a generic contractor quote.
Insurance Steel Brokers specializes in artisan contractor insurance throughout California, with local relationships across Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Escondido, Encinitas and the broader San Diego County market. We help trade businesses connect general liability, completed work, crews, tools and commercial vehicles.
The term artisan contractor describes a range of skilled trades; it is not a substitute for your CSLB classification or a guarantee that an insurer accepts every operation. We start with your actual work, whether that is service and repair, installation, remodeling, new construction or a combination.
Our focus includes plumbers, HVAC businesses, electricians, carpentry contractors, flooring installers and drywall companies. We also review painters, tile and masonry contractors, landscapers, fence installers and other specialty trades. Unusual or higher-risk operations require their own discussion, not a blanket promise of coverage.
Choose the trade that matches your work.
A small connection can create a large property claim. Build the coverage review around your plumbing work, service calls and the systems you leave behind.
Heating, cooling and refrigeration jobs carry different responsibilities. Match insurance to your installations, maintenance contracts and work sites.
The systems you install keep a property running. Review coverage around your electrical work, project requirements and responsibilities after completion.
Finish carpentry, framing and custom installations are not the same risk. Start with the work your business actually builds.
Hardwood, tile, carpet and resilient flooring bring different worksite and installation questions. Build your coverage review from the floor up.
From hanging board to finishing occupied spaces, your insurance should reflect the work, heights and contracts your crew takes on.
Build a coordinated contractor insurance review.
A job-ready insurance program is not just a general liability limit on a certificate. Consider allegations involving completed work, employee injuries, vehicles, mobile tools and materials awaiting installation. Umbrella limits, bonds and other protections may also matter to a particular contract.
We review how these pieces fit together without treating insurance as a guarantee of workmanship. Policy terms, exclusions and the cause of a claim control the response. Contract promises should be compared with the coverage actually available.
Review injury and property-damage allegations, trade restrictions and the work you leave behind. Insurance is not a workmanship warranty.
Match payroll and employee duties to the work performed; verify applicable California licensing and employee requirements.
Account for service trucks, trailers, drivers and hired or non-owned vehicles. Tools carried in a truck need a separate review.
Consider mobile equipment, installation materials, theft conditions, rented items and replacement valuation.
Review higher limits, eligible underlying policies and any gaps between primary and excess coverage.
Keep surety obligations distinct from insurance. Review your entity, CSLB license and contract requirements.
Contracts, certificates and changing scope of work.
Bring the full insurance requirements from your customer or general contractor. Additional insured status, primary/noncontributory terms and waivers need actual policy provisions or endorsements; a certificate alone does not add them.
Tell us before you add a new trade, take on higher projects, subcontract more work or move into larger commercial contracts. A policy written around last year’s service calls may not fit a different operation. Accurate revenue, payroll and subcontractor records also help avoid surprises at audit.
California licensing is a separate responsibility.
Workers’ compensation and bond requirements depend on current law, license classification, entity and actual operations. Some contractors need coverage even without employees. Verify the rules directly with CSLB rather than assuming an exemption based on the size of the business.
Our Carlsbad team can organize the insurance review around your license and work, but we do not issue licenses or provide legal opinions about contractor status. Insurance, a license bond and a project bond serve different purposes.
A useful starting point for any skilled trade.
- Legal name, business entity, CSLB license and classifications

- Revenue, payroll, subcontractor costs and employee duties
- Vehicles, tools, equipment, materials and storage arrangements
- Current policies, loss records and renewal dates
- Complete contract insurance requirements and requested endorsements
Questions worth asking.
- Which artisan contractors do you specialize in?
- Our focus includes plumbing, HVAC, electrical, carpentry, flooring and drywall contractors. We also review other skilled trades based on the actual operation and available insurer appetite.
- Can a small contractor get help before taking a larger contract?
- Yes. Share the proposed work and complete insurance requirements before starting. We can assess limits, endorsements, exclusions and additional coverage needs; issuing a certificate is not a substitute for that review.
- Do artisan contractors always qualify for a workers’ compensation exemption?
- No. California rules depend on classification and circumstances, and some contractors require coverage even without employees. Check current CSLB guidance and disclose all labor arrangements.
- Do you serve trades outside San Diego County?
- Yes. We serve artisan contractors throughout California from Carlsbad. Tell us about all work locations and any activity outside the state so that eligibility can be assessed.

A specialty trade is not a complete risk description. Explain the work, the job sites and the responsibilities that travel with your crew.
A certificate summarizes insurance. The policy and its endorsements determine the protection. Know the difference before a job begins.
