Insurance for plumbing contractors.

A small connection can create a large property claim. Build the coverage review around your plumbing work, service calls and the systems you leave behind.

Trade-focused guidance for plumbers.

We work with plumbing contractors doing service and repair, repiping, water-heater installation, drain work and new construction. A residential service plumber and a contractor taking on underground utilities or major commercial jobs may need different underwriting. Describe the full operation, including occasional work, rather than relying on a license number alone.

From our Carlsbad office, we serve San Diego County, North County and California statewide. We specialize in skilled-trade businesses and review the actual scope of work, crew, tools and contracts before approaching appropriate markets. Eligibility and terms vary; an online request is the beginning of a conversation, not proof of coverage.

Keep the key protections distinct.

General liability & completed operations

Review injury and property-damage allegations, trade restrictions and the work you leave behind. Insurance is not a workmanship warranty.

Workers’ compensation

Match payroll and employee duties to the work performed; verify applicable California licensing and employee requirements.

Commercial vehicles

Account for service trucks, trailers, drivers and hired or non-owned vehicles. Tools carried in a truck need a separate review.

Tools, equipment & materials

Consider mobile equipment, installation materials, theft conditions, rented items and replacement valuation.

Umbrella & excess liability

Review higher limits, eligible underlying policies and any gaps between primary and excess coverage.

Contractor license & project bonds

Keep surety obligations distinct from insurance. Review your entity, CSLB license and contract requirements.

Water damage and completed plumbing work.

A supply-line connection, installation error or failure after a job is completed can lead to allegations of damage to a customer’s property. Review completed operations, water-damage restrictions, deductibles and exclusions. Liability for resulting damage is not the same as the cost to redo your own work.

Explain whether you work in occupied homes, multifamily buildings, commercial kitchens or new developments. A loss involving several units or an extended shutdown can look very different from a straightforward service call.

Be precise about excavation, gas and underground work.

Tell us about trenching, sewer connections, gas piping, fire-suppression work, backflow services and other specialized activities. These should not be silently included under a general plumbing description; carrier restrictions can be material to a single job.

Identify your equipment, the use of subcontractors and any higher-risk or excluded work before accepting a contract. We can discuss available markets and endorsements without promising every activity will fit the same policy.

Service vans, tools and the people doing the work.

Work vehicles, drain-cleaning machines, inspection cameras, inventory and tools need their own values and use details. Theft from a vehicle is not automatically covered by the vehicle’s insurance; storage and unattended-equipment conditions matter.

California workers’ compensation and contractor licensing requirements must be verified for your classification and circumstances. Provide payroll and duties, and do not assume a no-employee exemption applies to plumbing work.

Prepare a more useful trade-specific quote request.

  • Legal business name, CSLB details, revenue and work territory
  • Service/repair versus new-construction revenue
  • Gas, excavation, sewer, commercial and multifamily activities
  • Water-damage claim history and job documentation
  • Service vans, diagnostic cameras and mobile-equipment values
  • Current policies, renewal dates, loss records and full contract insurance requirements

Questions worth asking.

Will a plumbers liability policy cover every water leak?
No blanket promise is appropriate. The cause, allegations, completed-operations terms, exclusions and policy conditions matter. We review the proposed wording and your work, including any water-damage restrictions.
Do you help plumbers outside San Diego?
Yes. Insurance Steel Brokers serves businesses throughout California from Carlsbad. Tell us every location and type of work so that insurer eligibility and terms can be evaluated accurately.
Does a certificate of insurance change my coverage?
No. A certificate is evidence of policy information, not an amendment. Requested insured status, coverage terms or waivers must be supported by the actual policy and applicable endorsements.
